Motorcycle Accident Kills Soldier
A motorcycle rider and military soldier was killed recently in a motorcycle accident in Clarksville, Tennessee. Tyler W. Day, 24, was riding his motorcycle around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday with a group of other motorcyclists westbound on Tiny Town Road near Tara Boulevard. Mr. Day collided with another motorcyclist in the group, Mike B. Williams, 24.
Both of the riders were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to be treated for their injuries. Mr. Williams was listed as in serious, but stable condition. Unfortunately, Mr. Day succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and died. Both were soldiers at Fort Campbell and currently reside there. So far, the authorities have not charged anyone involved with the accident with a crime, but the investigation is still ongoing.
Motorcycle Accidents in Tennessee
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security keeps track of fatal vehicle accidents that take place across the state, including motorcycle accidents. According to their research, so far in 2015 there have been 46 deaths as a result of motorcycle accidents in Tennessee. Between 2010 and 2014, there were 138, 114, 139, 135, and 121 motorcycle accident deaths every year, respectively, and hundreds more motorcyclists every year were injured in motorcycle accidents across the state.
Motorcycle accidents are also the most costly type of traffic accident that occurs in Tennessee and across the state. Every year, motorcycle accidents cost around $12 billion in economic burden. In fact, only one in every four motorcyclists who are hospitalized after an accident have a total bill of less than $10,000. While the use of a helmet, as per Tennessee law, does alleviate some level of the injuries and cost for motorcycle accidents, it is still greater than other types of accidents out on the roads.
Compensation for Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcycle accidents often come with extensive physical, emotional, and property damage attached because of the force of the accident and lack of protection that this type of vehicle provides. There are many things that compensation can cover in a motorcycle accident, including:
- Present and future medical expenses;
- Lost wages and disability payments;
- Impaired earning ability;
- Rehabilitation and physical therapy;
- Scarring and disfigurement;
- Pain and suffering;
- Emotional distress;
- Loss of enjoyment of life;
- Loss of consortium;
- Property damage;
- Wrongful death;
- Funeral costs;
…and other costs that are reasonably related to the damage caused by the motorcycle accident.
However, it is important that you record all aspects of the accident in medical records, receipts, photos, witness statements, and more. If not, the insurance company may attempt to minimize the amount of damage that was caused in the accident and offer you far less than what you are truly owed.
